Montessori School Trips
The Montessori Institute for the Science of Peace (MISP) and Friends of the Rainforest are pleased to present an authentic learning experience that incorporates tropical ecology, peace education, scientific study and travel abroad in Costa Rica, reflection, global awareness, and youth empowerment and activism – designed especially for Montessori students.
Testimonial from one of our recent trips:
Our students had the most marvelous experience. It was transformational for all of them from the 9 1/2 year old boy who was transfixed by the delicate life he held in his hands during the mist net experience with Luisa to the 12 year old girl who intends to dedicate her life to the rain forests and its preservation to the one parent we took with us who, as she says, could not believe what her eyes were seeing. I think that our experience in the Children’s Eternal Rainforest epitomizes Dr. Montessori’s oft quoted remark, “The secret to good teaching is to regard the child’s intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown to grow under the heat of a flaming imagination. Our aim …(is) so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his inmost core.”
The mother who accompanied us on the trip wrote to me, “The highlight of (my daughter’s) nine year experience with the school was the trip to Costa Rica. That trip was a life changing experience for her and me. Time and again I found myself not believing what I observed with my own eyes: kids uninterrupted in their scientific exploration, the guide’s depth of knowledge and professionalism, the beauty and peacefulness of the rainforest, the well-organized and clean accommodations and dining facilities- including delicious food, the unstructured yet very well organized comprehensive learning activities. Finally, I believe the kids’ last presentations said it all-how much they learned and how they changed and grew up in that trip.”
Friends of the Rainforest
Friends of the Rainforest is a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging students in studying, exploring and taking action to protect the unparalleled biodiversity of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest (CER) in Costa Rica. Friends of the Rainforest’s curriculum and scientific research framework provide teachers with the tools to educate students about tropical ecology and prepare them for a unique learning experience that incorporates scientific study, multi-culturalism, reflection, global awareness, empowerment and activism.
Created by the efforts of youth from around the world, the Children’s Eternal Rainforest provides an unparalleled platform for this learning adventure. Friends of the Rainforest’s curriculum provides students with the opportunity to experience the forest, participate in ongoing research and design their own independent projects. It also provides students with a 55,000 acre living example of what can be accomplished through youth-driven social movements to protect our natural world and encourages them to become part of the solution.
University for Peace
Headquartered in Costa Rica, the United Nations-mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) was established in December 1980 as a Treaty Organization by the UN General Assembly. As determined in the Charter of the University, the mission of the University for Peace is: “to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations.”
Before traveling to Costa Rica, students learn more about UPEACE’s efforts to lead the discourse of global peace education. While on campus, students observe and participate in UPEACE classes and lectures, work with the UPEACE sustainability club, and interview UPEACE students about current events, peace efforts, and environmental topics. Students stay with host families for an added cultural exchange.
Biodiversity and Peace: An Inquiry-Based Rainforest Curriculum is designed to create substantial local and international experiences that begin well before, and continue long after, the culminating trip to the Children’s Eternal Rainforest. For more information about your school’s participation in the program, contact Elizabeth Henke of MISP at firstname.lastname@example.org.
